Trick or Treat!

From the number of costumes on campus, you would think you just walked into an elementary school parade. Only at RIT will you see people going all out building robot costumes with working lights. Unfortunately, I didn't remember to bring my camera to class but maybe i'll get some pictures later tonight. Zach did run up and down the halls last week dressed as a tiger...



Guess who is officially working for admissions?? Had the interview yesterday (which I mentioned in my last post) and I got an email around 4:30 saying that I got the job! I'm going in on Monday to sign all of the paperwork and what not and I'll probably be starting for real on Tuesday. Basically the job will entail office work, sorting papers and what not, giving tours and hopefully blogging!

Somedays All I Do Is Watch the Sky

Snow, Snow, Snow! It has officially snowed in Rochester. No accumulation yet, but there were some definite flurries yesterday from about 3 am until 6 pm-- very pretty. Looking at the forecast, I think it has decided that it is not quite time for a heavy dump-- although a few hours north of us there was between 6 and 12 inches...

Anyway, let's see what's new... I don't think this week has been overly excited.. just a lot more of the usual homework, class, sleep, homework but that's not always a bad thing. This week has been oddly short, I can't believe that tomorrow is Friday! Next week is week ten-- the last week of the quarter. Let's just say I almost need my toes in order to count the number of things that I need to get done..

Wednesday morning Ashley and I got up around 9:30 and went to the SAU to make hundreds of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I got an email through habitat for humanity a while back that asked for volunteers so I decided to sign up for it. It was run by Hillel ( Jewish Community) and Foodlink. They had hundreds of boxes of bread, peanut butter and jelly and we got our nifty paper hats on and got to work spreading peanut butter. Channel 12 News from Rochester showed up and actually filmed us so we were on the news sometime.. but I never got a chance to see it. I talked with someone from Foodlink about what they do etc and she suggested that if I was interested to volunteer at their warehouse sometime.. so, I came home yesterday and emailed a guy at Foodlink and I'm going to be going in to volunteer on November 8th! Foodlink is not a soup kitchen or whatever you wanna call it.. it's a food distribution center which means they go to places like Wegmans and ask for food donations and then distribute that food out to local soup kitchens. That way there is one person, rather than 12 going to Wegmans for donations.

This morning I woke up bright and early at 6:30 am... haven't seen that hour on the front side of my day in a while. I had a 9 am job interview with admissions this morning so I got all bundled up in my coat and headed over there. Unlike most interviews, it was a group one so there were 4 people interviewing 5 applicants.. interesting. We're supposed to hear back either tonight or tomorrow so we'll see how that goes. If I do get the job, it would mean that I could blog for RIT that all of the perspective students read... I think that'd be pretty awesome because I blog already anyway =)

Well, I can't really promise to update much for the next week or so... but the last class of the quarter is on November 7th, so I'll have tons of time then!

Apples, Peppers and... Raw Fish Heads?

Went to the Public Market today with Ashley. It's about a 20 minute drive from campus in the heart --aka, sketchy part-- of downtown Rochester. Aside from the pouring rain and lack of parking spots it was pretty awesome and we definitely plan on going back. Everything there is ridiculously cheap yet really good looking... aside from the fish heads. They have it set up under two huge covered buildings and vendors line up with their food, clothing, etc. If I had more cash on me, I probably would have gotten more. I did get a whole basket of apples (about 10 of them) for 2 dollars, can't find that in a grocery store huh?? (Sorry Mom if I made you jealous =) ) Also got another winter hat for 5 bucks... it's super cute and I'd post a picture but i'm too lazy, maybe later! From the market we went to the marketplace mall which is about 5 minutes from campus. Ashley needed boots, jeans and some other stuff and I needed some stuff for my 3d design project. We also met up with Greg and John to look at halloween costumes but then decided we're not even going to be going to any parties on halloween so there's no point.




Just got back from dinner with Drake, Greg, John and Ash.. they're headed off to some haunted house later tonight (while I work on my stupid research paper) and then I think we're all meeting up to go to a comedian around 11. Tomorrow's forcast is: homework. Speaking of forecast... look at the next week. Yuck.

Twenty Days, Folks.

Thanksgiving is quickly approaching, faster than some of you may think... So watch out Maryland, here I come! 

Just finished up week eight. Went out to dinner with a group of friends.. It's kind of funny here.. once you have one deaf friend you start meeting them ALL because they are somehow all related, friends, or knew each other in some weird chain of knowing. After nine weeks of using sign language, I can definitely tell I'm getting better at it. I am by no means fluent.. in fact, far from it. But I manage to hold conversations and at least have some idea of what is going on. It's kind of cool really, I've just been thrown in an entire new language. I've gotten some comments like "wow, you're actually improving.." or "can you seriously understand what they're saying?". The way I see it, you won't learn something unless you try. Sure, it's a lot easier to pick up just by living around other deaf kids but you actually have to ... in mr. molfino's phrase, be "proactive"... I try to learn at least one new sign every day either by watching the interpreter in class/campus events, asking how to sign something or watching other people in the elevator or at dinner (no, it's not rude to watch other people sign.. i've asked.). 

Anyway, a bunch of people went out tonight to see Saw 5 because it came out. For one, i'm not a big fan of scary movies... although I don't really mind seeing the Saw movies. I just decided to be a good kid (or just really lame...) and stay here and knock out some of my homework so i'm not up until 3 am next week. Worked on my self-portrait for a few hours and now i'm switching gears and going to work on my research paper for writing. I think I pretty much have the entire library sitting on my nightstand right now... I'm working on a project for 3d and I checked 4 books out to use as a reference then I'm working on this research paper about how bikes are going to provide a sustainable future for our environment... so i cleared out the libraries section of books on bikes then I checked out a book on graphic design just because it had an awesome cover page. I do believe I will be living in the library this winter, they have comfy couches, tons of books and coffee! What more could you want? 

And the Beat Goes On....

Yeah, yeah... four updates in less than 24 hrs. At least, I think it's four. These past 24 hours have seriously felt like an eternity. I think that might have something to do with me staying up until 2:45 am, waking up at 5, attempting to register until 8:15, sleeping until 10, doing homework until 11:30, sitting in two lecture/critiques from noon until 5, doing homework until 7, eating dinner, watching the first game of the world series, hanging out with people, doing more homework, wandering around campus.. and the list goes on. Seriously, who knew you could fit so much in??

I didn't end up getting into the Vector Imaging class that I needed which has both pros and cons... Pros: no longer have class from 8am until 9 pm on Wednesdays. Cons: i'm going to have to end up taking it spring quarter, I'm only taking 12 credits right now, I wanted to take it... I tried applying for unmet needs but that didn't go so well. I'm currently in the process of trying to declare a minor so that I can take classes in that field...

Ashley is rather cooperative while I mess around settings, Drake on the other hand moves around more than a 3 year old.. in fact, he moves around so much that I have to use the motion setting for him =) It took about 15 tries to get this one haha)

It's so hard to believe that it's already Thursday!! Where the heck did the week go??? Last time I checked it was Sunday morning and we were being idiots standing outside waiting for an event that had actually happened a day earlier. Only a week and 2 days before finals week and then we get to go home and eat mashed potatoes!! Mmmm.

It's not really the schedule i'd hoped for, but it'll do. One of the courses I need to take is telling me that I'm not eligible so I went ahead and filed for unmet needs.. hopefully I'll get into that.

Registration Problems

Kay kids, this is going to be a freaking long morning. 

"All SIS sessions are currently in use. More sessions will become available as students complete their registration... blahblahblah" 

SIS opened at 6am... It's now 6:06 in the morning and the servers are already crashing. Lovely. I have a feeling i'm going to waste away the next 6 hours of my life refreshing this stupid page. 

It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time

Well, class registration starts in about 3 hours. Or we have to get up then anyway, but as you can see I haven't even gone to bed yet so it's going to be a rather short night =) We might actually never get around to the whole sleeping thing. Oh well. 

Today was disgusting. It was raining/freezing rain/snowing all day and really, really cold with big gusts of wind. Not that i'm complaining... but I did step in a giant puddle of cold water on the way back from my 6-9pm class. Yuck. Did some painting to finish up my 2d project, went to dinner with Drake at the dining commons and then we've mostly just been hanging around here being goofy on our floor. Ashley has officially gone insane tonight.. she's been dancing around and talking in weird accents all night =) 

Just went outside for the heck of it, I had to take a few pictures for my 3d class and then we just ran around and frolicked. 

We're done now..

Kay, guys.. that's enough. We'd like a break now...

As the quarter is winding down.. so are we. Tonight has shown that we're pretty much all ready for a 2 week breather. Not that everyone is sick of each other but it would be nice for a, you know, change of pace. I'm still really, really happy here but I'm looking forward to not having to deal with classes, homework, extra stress, etc. 

Guess it's bedtime now.

Fall in Rochester

Well, the first prediction of snow for the year is for this week! (I'm not entirely sure if that is the appropriate moment to use a "!") According to our local weather station, there is supposed to be a "light snowfall" on Wednesday. Hard to believe that after looking at these pictures taken yesterday, huh? 

Anyways, for some reason Ashley and I stayed up until 4:45 am on Saturday night... not the best thinking on our part but we weren't tired and there was a police chase outside of our window, so we didn't want to miss that. Woke up at 8 in the morning to shower and get ready for our outing. Ash, Drake and I signed up to go to downtown Rochester to the public market they set up on weekends. The three of us were going to meet for breakfast at 9 and then the van was supposed to leave at 9;45 am. So, we show up at Gracie's at 9 and guess what? They were closed. I guess not one single person in a 14,000+ campus would want breakfast at this hour. We just decided we could wait until we got downtown and eat there so we chilled in Gracies (there were people sleeping in there?!??). 9:45 rolled around, no sign of anyone, then 10, 10:30. Seems a little odd because it was supposed to be a group of 15 or so. We had a brief moment of panic when Drake goes "uhm, guys is it day light savings??" but nope, not until November 2nd. We eventually just left and walked back to the dorms. Turns out it was on Saturday not Sunday. Yeah, we felt pretty stupid that out of three people we all managed to get the date wrong. Oops. 

Instead of going back to bed, Ash and I decided to run around and take pictures around campus because it was such a nice day. (Drake was grumpy and decided to go back to bed before lunch at 12:30) 

It's kind of nice to walk around early on a Sunday morning, there isn't anyone else around. Unfortunately it was Open House day so after about noon, the campus was swamped and getting a table for lunch was extremely difficult. 

Didn't really do much else yesterday other than homework. Oh, we did go with Drake, Greg and Zach to Wegman's just for the heck of it. Of course, yesterday was Sunday night football as well as one of the final games of the baseball season (what the heck has college done to me??! i've become a sports junkie) Just kidding =) I just pretend to watch. 

Brrr... It's Cold In Here

Went on a double date last night with Drake, Ash and Greg to the mall. Ate at Friendly's for dinner and then walked around. Ashley and I bought hats so that we don't freeze to death in the winter. Came back from the mall and we watched the movie Hot Chicks. After the movie Drake, Ash and I went on a walk around campus.. it was 12:45 in the morning at that point and a whopping 35 degrees, only 3 degrees from being prime snow weather. 

The hat in the first picture was not the one I bought and my parents were requesting a picture... so here it is. I think we've pretty much gotten over the fact that we look ridiculous in these hats but I don't really care because my head is going to be excellently warm. I've been wearing it around all day just for the heck of it (except to draw my self-portrait because that would be silly. 

Woke up around 9:30 this morning and I've been working on homework pretty much all day except for a break around noon for breakfast/lunch and then one for dinner. It's coming down to the end of the quarter and my agenda book can definitely tell.. there isn't much white space =) Currently working on a project for 2d involving a 3 foot by 2 foot collage with painting and newspaper, a project for 3d that I have to make 8 journal entry/designs for as well as a finished product in picture form, an 1250 word essay on "appropriate technology" which is basically just something that will contribute to a sustainable future, a raster imaging project to make a self-portrait in photoshop, and a 25 inch by 40 inch (?) drawing of my face.. yuck. So yeah, things have been pretty busy around here.

Oh yeah and in case you were wondering, the picture in the last post "Problem Solved" was just something I found on the internet that I thought was funny because that's totally how I would solve a rubik's cube.

I got twenty bucks today. For working? No, just because i'm special.

The great thing about college is graduate school... not that I plan on going with that route, but for the simple fact that they need people to participate in their studies. So today, I spent 2 hours of my life answering some simple questions and debating with anonymous people online about our current political system, views, etc. Then I got twenty bucks, simple as that. 

Played volleyball tonight, it was so-so. Just wasn't feeling it tonight for some reason. It also turns out that the movie we wanted to see isn't even playing until tomorrow night (guess we can't read signs...). Oh well, more time for homework.

Every Second Counts

Goodness gracious, time goes by quickly. 

The title of this post was inspired by the Plain White T's 2006 album called... well... "Every Second Counts" I've been listening this CD on repeat pretty much all week. 

I look once and it's Sunday night then the next thing I know, it's almost Friday! I guess that is a mix of good and bad. School is good, i'm actually enjoying my classes for the most part. I am kind of ready for a break though. I'd like to just have a minute to breathe and fortunately Thanksgiving is right around the corner. We are currently in the midst of week seven which means that we only have 3 weeks left until finals week. Art majors are faced with the burden of 7 classes a quarter with 3 of those being studio classes.. however, we seem to be pretty lucky come finals week. Yay for only having 2 finals! It would be nice if they were on say.. Monday instead of thursday, just because then I could go home earlier and not have to wait around for a week but hey, no complaints here. 

I should probably quit wasting my time before dinner and go work on some homework. I'm meeting Ashley and Drake for dinner, working on some homework, going to volleyball practice and then going out to see a movie with Ash, Drake and some other fun kids. 

As long as I'm procrastinating on my homework... I'd like to thank people for actually putting up with my nonsense and coming to read my blog! It's kind of awesome to look at the map and see where everyone is coming from.

In other related news, I watched the debate tonight (or part of it, anyway) between Obama and Mr. Blinky-Pants. Goodness that man blinks a lot. I didn't really notice it at first but after I did, I didn't hear a word he said. Oops :) 

In unrelated news... today was KIWI day at Gracies!! Before coming here, I didn't even know I liked kiwi so much. Surprisingly, Gracie's (known for their less than average food) has amazing fruit, who would have thought? So on kiwi days, which only come once in a blue moon, I load up on it! 

Hmm, I think I should probably get back to my homework. I've spent over 6 hours painting today.. I'm covered from head to toe in black and white paint. Fortunately I only have one class tomorrow, yay! 3d was canceled for this week which has resulted in lots of unclaimed time (normally occupying 6 hours of my life). Tomorrow night I think I'm going to a volleyball practice in the SLC and then a group of us are going to see Night at the Roxbury, a free movie showing on campus hosted by CAB. 

Paper Bags and Plastic Hearts

Last night Ashley and I went to the Boys like Girls and Cute Is What We Aim For concert in the Gordon Field house (on the RIT campus). We decided to go all out.. and act like middle school girls by wearing the bands t-shirts! I guess it allowed us to fit in more at the actually concert because the average age was about 15.

We had a really awesome spot right up on the stage.. with no one in front of us which was perfect for picture, videos and getting to touch the lead singer of Boys Like Girls!

After the concert, both of our ears were ringing (probably because we were RIGHT in front of the speaker) but we decided it was well worth it and all of my hearing has returned as of this morning. I have a video of Boys Like Girls but it's taking a while to load on youtube... so if you have facebook you can go look at it on there in the mean time.

Tuning Out the Bad?

Ever stop and think sometimes why you like or don't like a particular thing? 

I'm a democrat. I'm registered as a democrat. I'm planning on voting for Obama for the current election. That being said.. why am I voting for him? Good question, I have no idea. Yes, it's alarming, the government has allowed naive people like myself to vote in the election. We're eighteen, legal adults, so what? How many eighteen year olds have a genuine interest in the election? Not a lot. I can't tell you the number of people I talk to who either don't know there is an election coming up, aren't registered to vote, don't know who is running for president or cannot tell you a single issue whoever they are "voting" for supports.

I've kind of always just identified myself with the democratic party although I'm not entirely sure why.  Partly because that's what my parents believe, sure? But not really. Can you feel a certain draw to a party, issues aside? Is it right to vote for one candidate just because you don't agree with the other? I guess. I feel sometimes like I just decided I was a democrat and I saw Obama was the chosen candidate so I decided to vote for him. I guess for a while I just thought all of his plans were great and everything McCain said was horrible and wrong. Perhaps I just glossed over the idea and didn't stop to really think about why I chose Obama. I just assumed I agreed with everything Obama said because of his title as "democratic presidential candidate."

Of course, I've done my homework now. I read CNN on a semi-regular basis.. although, I do have to say it's honestly because I mostly just enjoy reading headlines like "Local Mom Finds Giraffe in Toaster with Biblical Symbol Grilled On." No really, I do read the news online; occasionally I'll glance at a newspaper or Time magazine if I have the chance. I can tell you basic points of each of the candidates. I've watched parts of the debates as well as the vice presidential debate (which so did not deserve the title.. "debate" but that's another topic for another time). I'm currently working on a paper about the democratic environmental plan so I can tell you about the cap-and-trade program Obama wants to implement. I support his efforts with the G8+5 summit to bring developing and developed countries together as well as his plan to phase out 125 year old incandescent light bulbs and his efforts to enforce standards to prevent mercury pollution, air pollution and other things harmful to people and the environment. I like the fact that he makes plans for 2060 but then has target goals along the way since he cannot possibly be president until that time. 

Okay, so maybe I do have an idea why I'm voting for Obama. But do you know why you're voting for the candidate of your choice? Regardless of political party, let's try and pick a president who will actually run the country, help our current environment predicament and hopefully stimulate some kind of economic growth so that I do not have to live in a cardboard box in 4 years.. Oh yeah, and while we're at it.. let's go for a president who can pronounce "nuclear" :) 

Brick City Homecoming

This weekend was Brick City Homecoming, RIT's fall event when a lot of parents, families and alumni come to visit for the first time. My parents came up on Thursday afternoon; it was really nice to see them after being away from home for so long. Fortunately, amidst all of our rainy-rochester weather, it was an unusually beautiful weekend. 

Thursday afternoon my class was cancelled so I met up with my mom, dad and Sarah for dinner before my 6pm class. Had an ice cream party at 9pm, Ash and I have been saving up ice cream from gracie's over the past week or so :) Andrew and Drake stopped by too as well as a couple people from down the hall.

Friday morning I had class from 12 until 4. After class my parents took me out shopping to get some art supplies and more winter clothes-- thanks guys! Also stopped at Wegmans, of course, for some food items. Drove into downtown Rochester afterwards to get some dinner from a cool pizza place. Sarah stayed in the dorms with me all weekend and thanks to some idiots on the 9th floor.. I was able to give her the full college experience. Around 2 am Friday night/Saturday morning the fire alarm went off... there ended up being an actual fire on the 9th floor (with smoke coming out the window and everything..) so we were outside until nearly 3 am... Sarah only had boxers and a sweatshirt on..  Welcome to RIT :)

Saturday morning we woke up and Sarah, Ash and I went and got smoothies and muffins from Beanz, a coffeeshop on campus. Met up with my parents before heading off to see Bill Nye the Science guy. After Bill, we went to see a concert on campus with a bunch of a cappella groups.. yay eight beat measure! 

This morning we woke up and went to breakfast with my parents at "Jay's Diner" before they headed back down the road to maryland. It was a pretty awesome weekend, however, now I have an overwhelming load of homework to do before Ashley and I go to a concert tonight. 

Moldy Bread, Smelly Boys and A cappella Groups

This is what happens when you send boys to college with a loaf of bread... Yes, that's BREAD!

They forget about it for 6 weeks and then are surprised to find it has grown a thick layer of blue mold...

(Drake proceeded to dump it in the boys bathroom toilet... I took a picture but it's so disgusting that I'm not going to even expose you all to that.. )

Tonight Drake, Ashley, Andrew and I went to Java Wally's because they had an acoustic night. Three of RITs a cappella groups performed as well as a number of people playing guitars. I apologize for the poor picture quality.. the lighting in the room was dim and it made it hard to take a picture even with the flash.

You see, each year during Thanksgiving week, my Aunt Barb and Uncle Mark so generously wake up at some insanely early hour in the morning and drive far away to pick up hundreds of pies... well, not hundreds, but it's A LOT. Pies are so tasty. Mmmm.

I thought I would just take a moment and write about my favorite holiday ever. Usually Thanksgiving is a spectacularly wonderful week of hanging out with family however this year will be ten times better because I WILL HAVE NO HOMEWORK! RIT conveniently schedules finals week right before we go home for break which means I will have no obligations other than hanging out with family, swimming and, of course, eating lots of pie and Grandma's yummy rolls (which i hope she is bringing?!). Oh man mashed potatoes... Guys, we need some of those too please. Gracie's mashed potatoes are just disgusting!

Speaking of family.. mine is coming tomorrow! Yay! This weekend is Brick City Homecoming so there are lots of activities and such around campus for families. It'll be nice to see them since it's been foreverrrr.

Today's featured artist is... Chris Johanson. He is an artist from San Francisco, California and his work is mostly with painting, drawing and sculpture. If you wanna read more about him you can click here.

We've just started a new project in my 2D class where we had to pick an image or poster and then turn it into our own image with a different meaning. I picked one of his pieces (not pictured below) and found his stuff to be kind of awesome. It's very contemporary and almost cartoon like. We're just on day two of the project so we'll see how it turns out!

Say Something

Busy, busy, busy. That pretty much sums up my life lately. I'm finally not sick anymore! Yay. We just made it through week 5 which means there are only 4 weeks left until finals... what a weird thought?! I'm currently working on a giant 30 by 40 inch self-portrait of my face, writing a paper on the democratic plan for the environment, working on a 2d project, making apples out of everyday objects for 3d and trying to have a life in there somewhere. 

No really, I've been pretty good about setting aside certain time for homework and then making sure that i'm getting out too. It definitely helps that my floor is awesome so I can just walk right outside my room and find a ton of people to hang out with. Funny thing is that the other night when Ash and I were hanging out with a bunch of people we looked around and realized they were all deaf. It never occurred to me that the majority of my friends now are hard of hearing or completely deaf. I think it's kind of awesome, really. I've been picking up a lot more sign and I can actually hold an entire conversation without really awkward pauses. My finger spelling is still pretty slow but eh, that'll improve with time.

Wednesday Drake, Ashley and I went to the girls volleyball game. Thursday after classes I met up with Ashley, Drake, Andrew and a couple of other people to see 21 at Ingle Aud. RIT has this thing Friday night after classes, I went to dinner with Ash and Drake (at Gracie's of course...). We came back to the dorms and ended up running around our floor until nearly 4 am. We did make an attempt to go out to Ritchie's, a free game room in the tunnels but the couches smelled really bad so we just came back here. Saturday morning we woke up around noon and then went out shopping. Ashley needed some ink for her printers and a couple of other things and I needed to pick up some board from Home Depot and some rag paper and more charcoal for my art project. It's super nice and super convenient that I have a roommate with a car :) Today looks like it's going to be very homework filled. I can't remember if there is anything else that needed to get done today. The huge, creepy drawing of my face needs to get done as well as the paper for writing. Since my parents are coming next weekend (well, thursday..) I'm trying to get as much done now as I can. 

We're going to be signing up for classes for winter quarter here in a few weeks (Oct 22nd). I met with my academic advisor the other day to go over which classes i'm going to be taking...

So it'll be about the same course load as this quarter except slightly more challenging. We'll see how that goes, I'm taking the maximum number of credits they allow you to take without getting special permission. I've decided to "minor" or "concentrate" in american sign language. I'm still going to pick another thing to minor in but I'll probably wait to declare that until sophomore year. 

Maybe i'll see if I can get Ash out of bed now so we can go get some brunch :)
