try it all

this is what my life looks like currently. huge spreads of logos/symbols that i haven't decided on. luckily they are both due within the next week so we can move on to bigger and better thing.
the thing i like about graphic design is there is no one right answer. which means i get to try things. lots of things. in multiple colors, shapes, weights, etc. it's fantastic. and time consuming.
i'll post the final symbols when i'm done.
anyone need a logo?
artist series: ryan kapp

Ran across these the other day, they're absolutely fantastic! The artist is Ryan Kapp. Check out his website for other cool stuff as well.

two hours on the erie canal

it was quite fantastic.

afterwards we wandered around pittsford down by the canal and went to a new cupcake place that just opened :)

and they say it snows in october...
in true rochester fashion the day that i choose to run outdoors, wrongfully assuming that i will be able to enjoy the cool weather.. it is NINETY DEGREES.

yes, 90. nine zero.
it was hot and not too enjoyable. especially because our campus is currently overrun with construction men.
but it sure looks nice, right? wanna come visit?
(that's my apartment, the green one in the way back.)
and no, i did not run around with a camera in hand. i wandered around and through campus to building 7 to check one out for the weekend :)
i am also currently realizing that it is only 10:50 in the morning and I've already woken up, went out to breakfast with a friend, done some errands and gotten around campus. this is proving well for the rest of the weekend... let's hope.
two big projects due soon, i'll post picture when i'm close to done.
this weekend is: open house for admissions, sara's wedding tomorrow, church on sunday, meeting on sunday night. hooray for being busy!
next week is my last cake decorating class! after that i'm going pro.

sorry guys
...i've been busy.

starting a new job.
and decorating cakes.

and capturing sunsets

and meeting famous people!
and listening to their lectures! (that's massimo vignelli in the front!)

and getting their autographs! (michael bieruts autograph!)

goodness gracious i picked the right major. picture: little kid in a candy store. except substitute bodoni, Helvetica and futura for the candy.
right now my schedule looks like this:

but that's alright because sleep is unnecessary when you're meeting famous designers. and there are 24 whole hours on sundays which are always good for homeworking.
can you believe it's only week TWO?!
yeah, me neither.

Catching up
It's week two and I feel like i've already been here for a million weeks.
Trying to fall into some semblance of a routine. Somedays work better than others. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are very busy.
This weekend included an IV meeting, cupcake after party, working from 9 am to 5:30 pm on Saturday for admissions helping with interviews, working on a group project for week three, going out to Moe's for dinner, and finally coming back to realize that the entire campus had lost power. Good news. Sunday was church, grocery shopping, cooking squash, homework and an IV meeting.
In summary, it was a busy weekend.
This week includes starting a new type of job (same place different things), another cake decorating class! and potentially some downtown wandering.
Also, lots and lots of Vignelli. Massimo Vignelli & his wife donated tons of money to RIT to build part of the new art building that went up this past year. The offical opening of that is this week so tonight I get to go learn how to give a tour of that and potentially meet some famous designers.
And a good story....
Yesterday was 9 am -6 pm straight with classes, work and no breaks so by around 4 pm I had a teensy bit of a headache and I was in need of advil or coffee whichever was closer. On my way to my 4 pm class I pass The College Grind-- which meant my answer was coffee! I asked the guy for some iced coffee thing they had and he goes "wow, i can't believe you like coffee that sweet" except i don't really, I just had no idea what that was. So he asked if he could make me a coffee surprise. My goodness that thing was delicious. I have no idea what all went in it but I went back after class to tell him how good it was and he was not there. Maybe next Monday?

sunday cooking
Ingredients:
2 Acorn Squash
1 14oz can Coconut Milk
Red Thai Curry Paste
water
Step 1: Cut two acorn squash in half, roast at 375 for 1 hour.
Step 2: Remove greasy grimy gofer guts from inside of squash.
Step 4: Because Mom is not there, go ahead and puree that puppy right in the pot! Adding enough water to avoid explosions.

Step 6: Realize said yogurt container is too small so grab a second. Fill and pat yourself on the back for meal planning ahead for the next week.

Step 7: Make sure no one is looking and try some straight from the pot-- it's really that tasty!
(weekend shenanigans post at a later time)

being a bunny
My mom is one of those lucky people who can rest easy knowing that I'm getting my fair share of fruits and veggies. Well, actually I dont thing she was ever worried. But regardless. In fact, I probably make up for about 3 other people and their lack of veggie consumption.
Cooking is turning out to work out fantastically now that I have both knives that no longer resemble a dull butter knife and enough counter space to open my own restaurant.
This is what lunches and dinners have looked like for the past few days. I have to admit, I broke down and bought pre-made chili from wegmans on Wednesday night after my 9 am to 9 pm straight day. Next time I'll actually be prepared. Maybe.

week one
I could have been really on top of thing and actually copied and pasted the whole blog post here but I'm not feeling it :)
So here! Ambassador Blog Post
Week one is DONE. actually accomplished some homework that needed to get finished this weekend and it's only thursday night! go me.
This weekend is looking awfully busy but at least it will keep me on top of things. This "week one" certainly felt more like week three to me in terms of work load. This quarter seems relatively manageable.
Anyway, time to keep chugging along on some homework.

lessons learned
school is good for learning.
sometimes it is instead the process of getting to school that teaches the most.
like... don't wear a skirt when attempting to ride a bike. it is horribly awkward when trying to get off. and most likely results in cut up shins.
not to worry.
learned my lesson and parked the bike far away from class as to not see anyone I knew while trying to figure it all out. and then promptly walked my bike home from class and changed into pants :)
classes themselves were good. designed some icons this morning in my symbols & icon class. hung around in the SAU for a bit. two hour sociology lecture. two hour break for lunch and other shenanigans. then finally an ASL class.
few things to do for homework tonight, nothing horribly bad. that of course, will all change come week two. already have two projects assigned.

It Feels Like Fall
It was 55 degrees when I woke up this morning, just chilly enough that I didn't want to get out from under the blankets. However, it was my very last day of summer and I needed to take full advantage of that.
This past Friday, a bunch of us met up on campus and drove 20 minutes to Greece, NY for an IV welcome back retreat. Lots of late night volleyball, oven s'more making, girl talks and general hanging out. Saturday all day was spent discussing what we wanted this fall to look like.
Today I had a jam packed day.. volunteering at church in the waddler's room (1 year olds), there were 21 of them! so much crying and lots of hugs to go around. i like to think of that as my weight training for the week. After that was Access Point (18-25 year olds at church just mingling and meeting people). Went to the 12:30 service which was all songs (called "The service about nothing" it was fantastic). Sara's bridal shower was after that... made some toilet paper wedding dresses and other fun things. Just got back from dinner at Lovin Cup with Kristin and now it's gilmore girls and IV design time before another IV event tonight.
WOoooo! I'm going to be ready for bed tonight. Classes start tomorrow at 8:00 am. More on that later.

The Week That Didn't Exist
Dear Week That Does Not Exist,
I believe I am in love with you.
You're not a lazy summer week and lightyears away from an action packed school week but rather that goldilocks sized week that slips perfectly in between.
When my alarm goes off at 7:00 to simply just remind me that it is 7:00 am, I promptly roll over, turn it off and enjoy the comfortableness of my bed.
When 8:30 rolls around and I have watched a TV show or two and made breakfast, I'm reminded that I could be going to work but it would also be perfectly acceptable to remain in a semi-horizontal position.
When 9:30 shows it's lovely face, I can decide that this would in fact be a good time for a bike ride and some inputting. But I can have it in the back of my head that the minute I get antsy I can pack up and gallivant elsewhere.
So, I will be fully enjoying tomorrow in all of it's week-that-does-not-exit-glory, of course, this time with the lovely reminder of school that awaits on Monday.
See you again in November.
Love,
Me
